smadged - (adj.) Of illegible text whose illegibility is caused by inappropriate alignment of the cyan, magenta, yellow, and black color layers used in print reproduction. The word is specific to the print industry, but can come up in everyday use since smadging is common in daily newspapers. When the four layers of colour (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) are built up on each other, the alignment of each layer must be accurate for quality reproduction. Smadging is most common with smallish white text placed on a dark background colour made of much CMYK. If the layers are off slightly, the text becomes obscured and thus illegible since the letterforms do not have clearly defined edges.

e.g., The printer messed up our newspaper. The text is completely smadged.
